Paris by Night by Car: A Route Through the City’s Lights

From the sparkling Eiffel Tower to the lights of Montmartre, Paris looks different after dark. Here’s a route by car and our tips for a memorable evening.

Why see Paris at night by car

Once night falls, the monuments light up, the riverbanks shimmer in the Seine and traffic often eases. By car, you can string together in one or two hours places it would take a whole evening to reach on foot, without getting tired and without worrying about rain or cold. It’s a great way to spend your first night in Paris, celebrate a birthday or show the city to family members who can’t walk long distances. You can still hop out for a few minutes to take photos at the most spectacular spots.

The route: from the Eiffel Tower to Montmartre

The tour naturally starts at Trocadéro, facing the Eiffel Tower, with the widest view of the illuminated Iron Lady. From there, follow the Seine, cross the Pont Alexandre III with its ornate lampposts, then drive up the Champs-Élysées to the Arc de Triomphe before heading back down to Place de la Concorde and its obelisk.

Next, Rue de Rivoli takes you to the Louvre, where the glass pyramid glows in the Cour Napoléon. Then it’s on to the Île de la Cité to see Notre-Dame from the riverbanks, before finishing in Montmartre at the foot of Sacré-Cœur, with the whole city spread out below you.

The Eiffel Tower’s sparkle

After dark, the Eiffel Tower lights up and generally sparkles for a few minutes at the top of each hour, until late in the evening. Lighting times can change with the season or special events, so check the tower’s official website before you head out. To catch it, plan to get to Trocadéro a few minutes before the hour. We can time your hotel pickup around that moment and then continue the rest of the route at your own pace.

Tips for a great evening

Night falls late in June and early in winter, so the season changes the ideal start time. In winter, the tour can begin in the late afternoon; in summer, it’s better after dinner. Keep a jacket handy for photo stops, since evenings along the Seine are often chilly. The tour pairs well with dinner: your driver drops you off at the restaurant, waits, and then picks up the route, or the other way around. If you’d like someone to explain the monuments, a guide can join you on request.
